    Manage Stress with OTC Products

    Looking for a product to ease stress?  You may want to consider OTC supplements* with one or more of the following ingredients.

     

    Kava – Kava comes from a plant called Piper methysticum, which is commonly found in the western Pacific Islands.  Social drinks containing kava are very popular in the South Pacific.  Kava has been used to calm anxiety and stress.  It can be damaging to the liver, so periodic liver function tests are recommended with use.

     

    Passion flower – Passion flower is a climbing vine originally found in the southeastern US, and Central and South America. It has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety, and may have effects similar to prescription anti-anxiety medications. Passion flower can cause sedation, dizziness and confusion in some people..

     

    Lavender – Lavender is a flowering, aromatic herb in the mint family.  It has been shown to improve anxiety when taken by mouth.  Aromatherapy with lavender oil may also reduce stress and anxiety.

     

    Lemon balm – Lemon balm is also an herb from the mint family.  When taken by mouth, it has been shown to decrease anxiety and stress.  The most common side effect is increased appetite.

     

    Ashwagandha –Ashwagandha, also known as Indian Ginseng, is an evergreen shrub found in India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. When taken orally, it may improve symptoms of stress, decrease anxiety, and improve mood. 

     

    Before taking any supplement, talk to your doctor or pharmacist to be sure there are no interactions with your current OTC and prescription medications, supplements or medical conditions.
