Rite Aid Reports 1.8 Percent Same Store Sales Increase for April
CAMP HILL, PA (April 30, 2009)-Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE: RAD) today announced sales results for April.
Monthly Sales
For the four weeks ended April 25, 2009, same store sales increased 1.8 percent over the prior year period. April front-end same store sales increased 3.2 percent while pharmacy same store sales, which included an approximate 453 basis points negative impact from new generic introductions, increased 1.2 percent. April and March front-end sales were impacted by a later Easter this year (April 12 this year versus March 23 last year). Same store front-end sales for the combined March and April sales period decreased 1.6 percent.
For the four weeks ended April 25, 2009, same store sales excluding the acquired Brooks Eckerd stores increased 2.7 percent compared to the prior-year period with front-end same store sales increasing 2.9 percent and pharmacy same store sales increasing 2.6 percent.
For the four weeks ended April 25, 2009, same store sales at the acquired Brooks Eckerd stores were flat compared to the prior-year period with front-end same store sales increasing 4.4 percent and pharmacy same store sales decreasing 1.4 percent.
Total drugstore sales for the four-week period were flat with sales of $2.003 billion compared to $2.003 billion for the same period last year. Prescription revenue accounted for 67.8 percent of drugstore sales, and third party prescription revenue represented 96.3 percent of pharmacy sales.
Year-to-Date Sales
Same store sales for the 8-week period ended April 25, 2009 increased 0.6 percent, consisting of a 1.6 percent decrease in front-end same store sales and a 1.6 percent increase in pharmacy same store sales.
Total drugstore sales for the 8 weeks ended April 25, 2009 decreased 1.2 percent to $3.999 billion from $4.047 billion in last year's like period. Prescription revenue accounted for 68.6 percent of total drugstore sales, and third-party prescription revenue was 96.4 percent of pharmacy sales.
