Rite Aid Chairman and CEO Honored with the Skin Cancer Foundation's Annual Skin Sense Award

Camp Hill, PA (October 15, 2009) - Mary Sammons, Rite Aid Chairman and CEO, has been honored with The Skin Cancer Foundation's Annual Skin Sense Award at the Foundation's Annual Skin Sense Award Gala in New York City.

Rite Aid has made significant contributions to raising skin cancer awareness at a time when the disease is increasing at epidemic rates. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States but also one of the most preventable and curable forms of cancer if it is detected early. There are more than one million cases diagnosed annually across the country - more than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon

Sammons was honored for Rite Aid's commitment to educating consumers with its in-store skin care initiative and its co-presenting sponsorship of The Skin Cancer Foundation's Road to Healthy Skin Tour.

When presented with the award, Sammons accepted "on behalf of all Rite Aid associates who focus every day on our mission of helping customers lead happier, healthier lives. It's an honor just to be associated with a group like The Skin Cancer Foundation that has helped so many people through its awareness campaign," she said.

David Greenberg, President of Maybelline New York-Garnier, also was honored with a Skin Sense Award because of Garnier's role in the development of new sun protection technologies.

The Skin Cancer Foundation has a 38-foot customized RV with two private exam rooms that travels the country offering free full-body skin cancer screenings by local dermatologists who volunteer their time. In the past two years, almost 7,000 people were screened during 165 stops, which included more than 100 Rite Aid stores. The tour was able to reach many people who would not otherwise have the means to be screened by a dermatologist. And in addition to the actual screenings, more than 34,000 people stopped by for the latest skin cancer information.

Rite Aid distributes more than 765,000 free skin care guides developed with The Skin Cancer Foundation to customers in its stores and on the Road to Healthy Skin Tour. The guide is available year-round at www.riteaid.com along with interactive tools including a quiz to determine skin type for specialized advice, skin cancer facts and an interactive body map to track skin changes on a regular basis.

Last spring, Rite Aid launched its exclusive RX Suncare products line to make high quality prevention more affordable. Seven of the products carry the prestigious Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation as an effective UV sunscreen with SPF 30 to SPF 50 and anti-aging vitamins.

Among other efforts to reinforce the need for daily sun production, Rite Aid joined with Garnier, the other Skin Sense Award honoree, to raise money for The Skin Cancer Foundation with a dollar from every sale of two of Garnier's anti-sun damage products purchased in a Rite Aid store during September and October donated to The Skin Cancer Foundation.

Skin care is part of Rite Aid's year-round commitment to health and wellness and its mission to help its customers leader happier and healthier lives. Rite Aid pharmacists counsel patients on skin cancer prevention throughout the year. They can especially counsel patients about photosensitivity and what medications cause the skin to burn more easily.

Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD) is one of the nation's leading drugstore chains with more than 4,800 stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia with fiscal 2009 annual sales of more than $26.3 billion. Information about Rite Aid, including corporate background and press releases, is available through Rite Aid's website at www.riteaid.com.

Now celebrating its 30th year, The Skin Cancer Foundation is committed to educating the public and medical professionals about sun safety. As leaders in the fight against skin cancer, the Foundation is the only global organization solely devoted to the prevention, detection and treatment of the world's most common cancer. The mission of the Foundation is to decrease the incidence of skin cancer through public and professional education and research.
