WHAT IS SHINGLES?
Shingles is a disease caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. In the United States, 9 out of 10 adults have had chickenpox. If you've had chickenpox, then the virus can live in your body for many years without causing symptoms. If it becomes active again - typically later in life - the chickenpox virus can give you Shingles.

Shingles is a painful, blistering skin rash that can cause pain lasting for months. The main symptom is pain, which can be quite severe. Other symptoms include fever, headache, chills and upset stomach.

An estimated 1 million cases of Shingles occur in the United States every year. Almost half of these cases occur in adults 60 years of age or older. According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 3 people will experience Shingles in their lifetime.

If you've had chickenpox, you can get Shingles at any time, without warning. There's no way to predict if you will get it or how severe your case could be.

WHAT IS THE SHINGLES VACCINE?
ZOSTAVAX® is a vaccine that can help prevent Shingles.

ZOSTAVAX® is used to help prevent Shingles in adults 60 years of age or older. Once you reach age 60, the sooner you get vaccinated, the better your chances of protecting yourself from Shingles.

ZOSTAVAX® is given as a single shot.

ZOSTAVAX® cannot be used to treat Shingles, or the nerve pain that may follow shingles, once you have it. Talk to your healthcare professional to see if ZOSTAVAX® is right for you.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone over the age of 60 get the vaccine.

No medication can cure shingles, but if the symptoms are detected early, medication can reduce the risk of complications and lessen the intensity of the pain associated with the disease.

If you're 60 or older, get vaccinated by a specially trained pharmacist at Rite Aid today.
