Rite Aid Partners with The Skin Cancer Foundation to Encourage Safe Summer Skin Care


Two-Month Campaign Features Free Resources Including Pharmacists' Expert Advice, Traveling Skin Cancer Screenings and Informational "Skin Care" Guides

12-Page Guides Offer Simple Skin Care Tips and Explain New Guidelines on Sunscreen Labeling

CAMP HILL, PA (June 6, 2012) – To help customers safely enjoy their summer, Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD) is kicking off a healthy skin care campaign today in partnership with The Skin Cancer Foundation. The campaign offers free informational Skin Care guides in stores and online, expert advice from Rite Aid pharmacists and continued support of a national tour bringing free full-body skin cancer screenings to more than 50 Rite Aid locations.

During the campaign running through July 31, customers are encouraged to talk to their Rite Aid pharmacist about how to take good care of their skin. Good skin health is especially important for many pharmacy customers, including those whose prescriptions may heighten their sensitivity to sun or diabetes patients and others at risk for chronically dry skin.

"As trusted and accessible health care providers on the front lines of community health care, our pharmacists are able to help customers make informed choices on a wide range of health topics including choosing the sunscreen that best suits their needs," said Robert I. Thompson, Rite Aid executive vice president of pharmacy. "We hope our customers will take full advantage of these free resources, which can help guide smart skin care choices for years to come."

Interpreting sunscreen labels is especially important this summer because new rules from the Food and Drug Administration have set standards for sunscreen labeling. Rite Aid is offering customers help interpreting sunscreen labels with information in the free Skin Care guides explaining labeling terms such as "broad-spectrum," water-resistant" and "protects against skin cancer." To be certain a sun-protection product is safe and effective, customers can also look for the The Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation. Sunscreens with the Seal of Recommendation are now divided into two categories based on their intended use: products are intended to protect from incidental sun exposure and “Active” products protect consumers from extended sun exposure.

Available for free in stores or online at www.riteaid.com, the full-color, 12-page Skin Care guides also explain:

  • The statistics behind skin cancer, which is on the rise and the most common form of cancer
  • Common skin care myths, such as the mistaken belief that people with dark skin don't need sunscreen
  • Nine skin-saving rules to live by based on The Skin Cancer Foundation's complete sun-protection regimen
  • The dangers of tanning salons and safe alternatives
  • Eight simple steps to perform a skin self-exam, which The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends performing monthly in addition to seeing a dermatologist annually for a professional skin
  • How to spot skin abnormalities that should be examined by a dermatologist. Fortunately, skin cancer is almost always curable if detected and treated early, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation

To promote the importance of annual skin exams, Rite Aid is a presenting sponsor alongside AVEENO® for The Skin Cancer Foundation's fifth annual Road to Healthy Skin Tour, which is coming to 27 states in 2012 including many Rite Aid Wellness Stores.
