Matthew's Haven began in March 2001. The old adage "running out of money before running out of month" is where Matthew's Haven has found its place. Their primary client population is the working poor or individuals who have been affected by employment termination, domestic violence or other disaster situations and who live in the rural communities of central Virginia.
The organization provides basic necessities such as gently used children's clothing, baby equipment including cribs mattresses, strollers, swings, diapers, formula and baby food. Assistance can be provided to the families for energy and food costs. Under extreme circumstances, and when funding allows, rental assistance can also be provided. All clients are referred through local community agencies, government social service agencies, local school systems, churches and other nonprofit organizations.
The mission is to provide basic necessities to children to nourish their bodies, enrich their minds and lift their spirits. Matthews Haven serves four rural communities in Virginia providing direct assistance to children who are at or below the poverty line, have been affected by sexual assault, domestic violence, or homelessness. The services are free of charge and Matthew’s Haven is a 100% volunteer run organization. Matthew's Haven offers an emergency assistance hot line with volunteers available daily. The organization offers several programs throughout the year including an Annual Coat Drive in October with distribution in November. This program provides coats, jackets, rain gear and sweatshirts to children. In December, we have our Give a Child a Christmas program, providing Christmas gifts and food for up to 80 children. The Baby Bundle program supports at risk first time mothers, teenage mothers, and others who are unable to have items for their newborn. Matthew's Haven will provide baby equipment including cribs, mattresses, sheets, changing tables, etc.
