Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stick with it I see a lot of reviews from people who said it got worse day 1. I just used this (have done so a few times in the past year), the first application makes the blisters swell. As I continue to apply, it dries them up and by day 3 they scab and fall off. It might seem as if it is getting worse day 1, but for me, it is just the sign that it is working. Without abreva, the blisters often pop and things get much worse. Also, use a q-tip and apply on top of the blisters. Don't use dirty fingers and rub this all over the place. You want it to sit right on top of the blisters and it will work. Also drink lots of water. Good luck!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pump So... the product itself is amazing but the pump tube container is the worst case of customer abuse ever. When they originally came out with this product it was a squeeze tube with a pin point opening so you could take out just a little bit at a time as thats all you really need to use at a time and at twenty dollars a tube you really don't want to waste this product but then suddenly they came out with this pump tube where I have to do battle to keep from pumping out this huge amount. It's preposterous! I was haaaappy with this product up until then and suddenly I find myself looking to my doctor for a alternative that is more effective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Helps stop massive scarring! I love Abreva. I used to get sore after sore in the same area and it would leave ugly scabs that would scar up my face. Sometimes I'm unable to recognize any symptoms before a blister starts to form, but if I apply Abreva the moment I feel a blister coming on, it usually stops it from developing any further. I'm extremely thankful for this, because when the sores become really huge, they are very painful and look absolutely ridiculous, so much so that I will not go out in public, even if it means calling out of work. I highly recommend this cream (I like the squeeze tube better; easier to control how much product you want to use).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't buy the pump. If you don't put the cream on at the first feeling of tingling, I think the cream is of no use. Putting it on after there is a scab doesn't do any good. Putting it on five times a day is pretty hard to keep up with. This is an extremely expensive product for the little you get. I'd say to ask for a sample of acyclovir (Zovirax) from your physician before trying this. The pump isn't practical. When pressed, it squirts on your shirt or all over your finger. You can't just slowly press it for a small amount. You get way more than you need. Something needs to be done with this method. How about a spray with a "mist", rather than cream?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely effective! I've been using Abreva to treat cold sores for several years. I have never found a medication that works so well! I apply Abreva at the first tiny sign of a cold sore and within a few hours, it is gone. It actually disappears! This morning, for the first time in a long time, I woke up with a large cold sore on my lip. It was already blistering with a yellow appearance. I applied Abreva every 30 minutes and again, it is almost gone. (Even though the cold sore was much larger and advanced.) I should take pictures before and after applications. It's unbelievable how effective it is. I highly recommend Abreva to treat cold sores!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No the the Pump! To date, Abreva is my go to product for my cold sores. Unfortunately, the company made a big error with the pump. You cannot control the amount that comes out and you have no way of knowing when it is empty. Just when I needed it the most, I discovered the pump was empty! At least with the tube you can control the amount and you know exactly how much you have left so you can buy a replacement before you run out. Also, the pump has a very poor plastic cap design, it will not stay on the pump when it's in my purse or pocket, I had to carry it in a plastic bag. I will look for an alternate product before I would purchase the pump again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stops a cold sore in it's tracks.... I've been using this for years. If you use it, according to directions, the minute you feel that weird pain/tingling, it will pretty much stop the cold sore from progressing. It does not cure it, but it shortens the duration and the disfigurement/pain from the blisters. If I don't get the blister, I can hide the cold sore pretty well with makeup. I also use the little patches that hide the cold sore. They're ok, better for flatter parts of your face like around lips, not around nose. Try putting a slightly heavier layer of Abreva on the cold sore at night when you go to sleep. Pricey, but a little goes a long way.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from New Pump Dispenser is Wasteful Product seems to work ok but is priced ridiculously high. Accordingly I choose to use it in very small amounts and see no difference in effectiveness using small vs larger quantity as long as the outbreak area is covered. That being said, my local stores switched from the small metal tubes to a pump style dispenser that shoots out WAY more than needed and regardless of any "light touch" effort, still pumps the same excessive amount out. Very wasteful to the point that it almost seems that your company intended it? My local stores no longer carry the small tubes I used and was happy with in the past. zip code 99206
