Why Feminine Products Aren’t the Answer For Incontinence

If you’re a woman experiencing bladder leaks for the first time, it may be tempting to reach for your familiar pantiliners or maxi-pads. They’re familiar and may already be stocked in your bathroom cabinet. Although they look similar, they’re not the best choice when it comes to handling this issue for two important reasons.

    Issues with Absorption

Feminine hygiene products are built to manage menstrual flow, which is typically released in occasional and smallish amounts. They’re not designed to deal with bladder leaks and may fail in the face of a steadier flow or larger amounts of a more liquid-like fluid.

Bladder protection products absorb fluid quickly and lock it away to help keep your skin dry, healthy and free of irritation. Look for products that have the right amount of protection for your needs. For instance, if you only experience a few drops when coughing, sneezing or exercising, slimmer pantiliners would probably do the trick.

If you have small surges that are more than just a few drops, you may need bladder control pads with light to moderate protection. For those who have a steady flow that can’t be controlled once it starts, moderate to maximum protection bladder control pads or underwear would probably be best.

    Odor Control

When urine and air combine, they create ammonia, which has a distinctive odor. Incontinence products are made not only to lock up this kind of odor, but also to prevent it from forming in the first place. This type of odor control system works much better for incontinence than feminine hygiene products, which may only mask odors with a fragrance.

These days, you don’t need to feel embarrassed about using incontinence products. It’s something lots of women encounter for various reasons, including pregnancy and menopause. Plus, they’re typically wrapped discretely, like feminine hygiene products, so you can tuck them in your purse and go about your day with confidence.
