    8 Incontinence Best Practice Tips

These tips for choosing and using incontinence products can help make sure you or, if you’re a caregiver, your loved one has the best experience possible.

    1. Choose well-designed products.

Look for high quality products with features to help ensure comfort and confidence. For instance, Rite Aid brand products have Dri-Lock™ to lock up moisture and SureDry® to keep it away from the skin (learn more).

    2. Get the right level of protection.

Products typically come in light, moderate and maximum protection levels. If you don’t have enough protection, you could experience problems, such as leaks or irritated skin.

    3. Pick a style that works for you.

Incontinence products are available as underwear or in-underwear options (such as bladder control pads and male guards). Go with the style that makes you feel the most comfortable and confident.

    4. Change soon after an incident.

While incontinence products are designed to retain moisture over time, it’s still best to change shortly after wetness occurs. This helps keep skin healthier by reducing the chance of exposure to moisture.

    5. Practice good skin care.

Keep skin clean and dry as much as possible to help avoid irritations. Incontinence wipes or washcloths enhanced with Vitamin E and Aloe can be useful to soothe and replenish the skin.

    6. Drink a healthy amount of water.

It may seem counter intuitive to drink plenty of water when dealing with incontinence, but water is essential for your overall health. Not getting enough can result in dehydration. It can also cause urine to become more concentrated and have a stronger odor.

    7. Use overnight products when needed.

Products designed for overnight use typically contain polymer, which absorbs urine and takes it out of its liquid state. This allows them to be worn for longer periods of time while sleeping without needing to be changed.

    8. Talk to your doctor.

Don’t be shy about asking your medical adviser for advice, if you haven’t already. Your doctor may be able to give you recommendations based on your lifestyle and personal medical history.
